Modern Cape Vernacular Style:
Simon McCullagh's home
Brief
Create a contemporary interpretation of a "Cape barn" within the local Cape vernacular architectural style, positioning the buildings around courtyards to accommodate and preserve the existing oak trees on the site.
Realisation
The site, which lies at the end of a leafy and quiet Constantia cul de sac, fronts onto a greenbelt stream and feels like it is tucked away in the country.
The buildings have been designed to work around the existing trees, creating a series of courtyards and spaces that flow seamlessly from public to private, and clearly express their function. Natural materials with contrasting textures have been chosen to accentuate the rural, yet contemporary, Cape vernacular style of the architecture. The project was designed to be completed in three phases; the first phase is currently complete, with the second phase due to commence shortly.
