Cape Barn Style Architecture:
A Winelands Country House

Brief

Design a family holiday home that allows for a range of interior and exterior spaces that can be opened up for extended family visits, but also easily isolated when only the parents are staying. A contemporary interpretation of the Cape vernacular architectural style was requested within an estate with very traditional Cape architectural guidelines.

Realisation

A series of clean cut contemporary "Cape barns" were designed around courtyards to maximise views and offer protection from the prevailing summer and winter winds. These provide a series of interior and exterior spaces that can be opened up or shut down depending on the number of people staying at the time.

Various submissions were made before the more contemporary design was approved. Integral to the design of the project was the interior and landscaping design, both of which were completed by Nicky Tyers of Colonial House Design.
